Is travel essential for trade?

Given advances in information technology and automation, travel is not essential for trade.

All the informational aspects of trade, such as catalogs, purchase orders, contracts, payments, shipping documents, etc. can be handled by data communications and software processing.

Trucks can be parked in lots at the border, the trailers detached, and new tractors from the receiving country used to deliver them to the endpoint.

Trains can be pushed across borders by locomotives at the back and then pulled onward by receiving country locomotives.

Ships can be automated and not require crews, or if they do have crews, the crews can be required to stay on board during unloading and loading, or the crews can be quarantined in port.

Air freighters can be converted to unmanned freighter drone operation.

In short, there is no essential reason why persons should be allowed to cross international borderss.

1. We work globally... From our home.

We have worked contracts on every continent but Antarctica. We never leave, it's all over the phone, online, and via the occasional video conference. In the 11 years since we started up we've been to exactly one client site, and that was because we were passing through town on our way back from our honeymoon.

We did have one candidate fly in to see us once. He was an old fashioned good old boy from Alabama, and didn't feel comfortable dealing with someone he'd never met in person. That's one, out of hundreds.

2. Still doable, if he doesn't mind looking at you through glass while he's in a decontamination spray!

3. LOL! He's a good guy

He didn't end up accepting our client's offer, but we still stay in contact often. He sent us a turducken and a few bottles of bourbon to our wedding.

I particularly like the ones stuffed with cornbread in the center.

9. I have had a real job and traveled for business.

But travel for business was much more important when the alternatives were only phone calls, telex, fax and FedEx.

10. You can't automate the entire global logistics cycle.

Pretending you can: all you do is shift labor. Instead of working logistics (you forgot resource extraction, utilities, retail, etc.) they work on building, supplying, engineering, maintaining the machines (and resource extraction, utilities, retail, etc.).

11. You don't need to automate everything, just use local labor.

If a mining truck needs maintenance in South Africa, send parts and instructions and have local technicians do the maintenance. You can even support the local technicians from the US via telecommunications. Don't dispatch technicians from the US.

7. You can't be serious with this statement:

"In short, there is no essential reason why persons should be allowed to cross international borderss."

8. I'm serious. Give some counter examples.

Well, you probably do have to send ambassadors and a few assistants.

There may also have to be a limited number of workers to set up international infrastructure, such as laying fiber cables.

But, for example, as long as we and Canada can ship stuff to each other and communicate with each other, there is no practical necessity to allow Canadians into the US or Americans into Canada.

13. Yes. That is clearly non-essential.

Same with other non-business travel, such as visiting relative, attending funerals, etc.

My grandfathers came from Europe on one way ship passages and never returned to Europe. They did write to relatives and friends occasionally, but the physical separation was permanent.

14. No way I would ever support something like that

There are places and things outside the US that I want and plan to visit in my lifetime.

There is no reason to eliminate all international travel.

16. The spread of deadly disease may change your mind.

The Plague of Justinian (541–542 AD) probably did a lot to eliminate any remaining long distance trade and travel in the Western Roman Empire area at the beginning of the Dark Ages.

All politics became local with the feudal system until the Carolingian Empire, over 200 years later.

17. I have been all over the world and while there is always concern for the spread of disease

An outright ban on international travel is neither warranted nor possible.

This isn't the dark ages and we have a vastly superior understanding of the methods of transmission and containment for diseases.

18. Contagious during incubation, long incubation period, and high mortality rate.

That's all it really takes for a disease to wipe out a reasonable fraction of mankind.

Consider AIDS. If it had been as contagious as the flu, much of the global population would have been infected before people started dying. By then, much of the global population would have been doomed.
